Banks Chartered Accountants have relocated giving us the space we need to double the size of our business.

We’ve moved to newly refurbished offices in Stratton, and now plan to increase gradually the number of staff from the current 22 to more than 40.

At 4,800 sq ft, our new offices at Vicarage Court, Ermin Street, are double the size of our old home, and offer facilities for running seminars and networking events, as well as boardroom space. There is ample free parking for clients and staff, and the ground floor is accessible for disabled people.

“We’re delighted with our new location, which has gone down very well with clients and our staff,” said Director Richard Mathews. “We have more space here, which we need to grow our business, and we certainly have the demand.”

As well as creating more jobs, we plan to run regular free events, utilising the new facilities; they will be a mixture of networking events, seminars and presentations.

Richard and co-Director Neil Elsden haven’t ruled out taking on more board members. They are also currently recruiting for a manager for the taxation department.

“We had outgrown our old premises, and now have the scope to do so much over here,” Richard said. “We can increase the size of our departments and offer more to our clients in terms of both services and free events. These are really exciting times for Banks Chartered Accountants.”

Before we moved in, the offices were completely refurbished. Included in the refit is a lounge, kitchen and TV area for staff.

 While some news was good for business – including plans to simplify the taxation system for smaller firms, and cut corporation tax – no mention was made of any changes to the small business rate.

 Mandy Gibson, at the firm in Devizes Road, said that for individuals there was also good news and bad.

 “The increase in personal allowance, moving towards £10,000, and softening to the plans to cut child benefit for high earners is good news for people in Swindon,” she said. “But while personal allowance has increased, the threshold at which people start paying the higher 40% rate has gone down, so more people will be in the higher tax bracket.

 “And the Chancellor’s plan to have a single tier pension and remove the earnings-related pension was a hidden sting. He has kept his plans for fuel duty in place, but made no cuts.”

 Cutting the upper income tax rate from 50p to 45p from next year and removing loopholes in the VAT system were both welcome moves, said Mandy.

 “But I felt the Chancellor was lacking in detail on some of his measures. He talked about extending enterprise zones, and extending tax credits for R&D and doubling enterprise credit. He also talked about investment in technology, which I hope will have a beneficial affect on Swindon as we’re at the centre of a highly technology-rich region. All good news for businesses, but we need to see some of the detail in the Finance Act.

 “He also said plans to integrate national insurance and taxation were moving forward, but gave no indication of when the new system would be introduced.

 “But he did talk about enterprise loans for start-up businesses. Again, the devil is in the detail, but that sounds a positive move for Swindon.”
